How to create the perfect focal point

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOTV) – Any room will feel more inviting, beautiful and comfortable if you have a focal point.

Some rooms have a fireplace or a great view that your eye naturally lands on. But if not, then you can create one with an interesting piece of furniture, a great piece of art, or even with an accent wall.

This should be the area or piece that stands out in your room, and once you determine what it is, you can design the flow of the room to move towards it, or to accentuate it.

For you overachievers,  you can create an even more interesting home by using focal points that are visible from neighboring rooms, which can naturally draw you throughout the house.

The focal point here is the fireplace. Whatever your focal point is, try to arrange the rest of the room so that it is highlighted and draws your eye to it, rather than fights for your attention.  Often, you can dramatically change the look and feel of a room just by rearranging the furniture.

Here’s an example of using a great piece of artwork as your focal point. This one draws your eye just because of its size, but with any piece of artwork, consider adding feature lighting to highlight it. And then take one or two colors from the art to use as accents throughout your room.

The right lighting can make all the difference. This awesome bed is clearly the focal point here, but notice how the lights just make it that much more dramatic and inviting.

Like artwork, an accent wall or display shelves are another feature that can create a focal point. The shelves shown here add another dimension to the room as well as providing a great place to display and store your treasures.

Here are just a few more examples of focal points:

Design can sometimes seem challenging, but choosing or creating a focal point and then designing around it will make things easier and give you that professional look.

My best advice?  Make sure it is colorful, visually appealing, or something that reflects a unique part of your personality.
