Fine wine, Argentine steaks, world-class polo, sultry tango. Bueno Aires prides itself (with good reason) on sophisticated taste and dramatic flair. With a deep appreciation for art, antiques and craftsmanship, the city certainly knows how to do luxury. Whether you prefer an intimate boutique hotel such as Francis Ford Coppola’s former home, an opulent neoclassical palace or the fantastical and decadent world of the Phillipe Starck-designed Faena Hotel, there’s a luxe hotel to suit all tastes.

Palacio Duhau Park Hyatt Buenos Aires

This grand hotel is located on an iconic avenue in the plush Recoleta district, a regal barrio known for French architecture, beautiful parks, cafes, upscale boutiques and a cemetery that is the final resting place for Eva Peron. The Palacio Duhau property is made up of a 1930s Belle Epoque palace and a modern tower connected by an on-site art gallery featuring local artists. The hotel exudes relaxed refinement with elegant marble floors, exquisite chandeliers, wood paneling and buttery leather furniture. Amenities include three refined restaurants, an indoor pool, a bespoke onsite tailor and one of the biggest spas in the city. Guests and locals alike flock to the hotel’s buzzy tiered garden, widely considered to be one of the most picturesque spots in the city to have a drink. Perhaps one of the biggest perks: Each room has its own personal butler service.

Park Tower

It has a reputation for impeccable service and a butler for every guest, so it’s no wonder the Park Tower has hosted dignitaries such as Prince Albert of Monaco, President Bill Clinton and Mohammed VI of Morocco. Located in Retiro, a barrio known for high-end shopping and residences for well-heeled expat executives, the Park Tower is within walking distance of waterfront barrio Puerto Madero and plush Recoleta. Half the rooms have views overlooking the port, while the other half enjoy city views of Buenos Aires. Amenities include an indoor and outdoor pool, clay tennis courts, a beauty salon, a gym and a 24-hour concierge.

Alvear Palace Hotel

For history buffs and travelers seeking a taste of glamorous old school Buenos Aires, there’s no more iconic hotel than this grand dame, which was officially declared a monument in 2003. Opened in 1932, the Alvear Palace lays claim to being the first luxury hotel in Buenos Aires, and today is one of the most important landmarks in the city, comparable to The Plaza in New York or The Ritz in London. White-gloved butlers (for guests staying in deluxe suite or higher rooms) are provided to unpack suitcases, press clothes, draw a bath and take room service orders. Besides the legendary service and opulent decor, the hotel also has one of the best rooftop views in the city after a recent refurbishment added three levels of sun decks, a rooftop pool, spa and bar.

The Four Seasons Buenos Aires

With postcard perfect views of the iconic Obelisco de Buenos Aires, the Four Seasons Buenos Aires is located on the edge of Recoleta. Paying homage to one of Argentina’s best loved past-times, an equine polo motif runs throughout the hotel, starting with galloping horse sculptures near the entrance, carved horse lamps in rooms and the Pony Line Lounge, a popular drinking den for locals and guests alike with DJ sessions on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The 165 guest rooms are spread between a 20th-century Belle Epoque mansion and a modern high-rise connected by the outdoor pool and terrace. A popular choice among visiting celebrities, Madonna lived in the seven-suite mansion while in town filming Evita.

Faena Hotel Buenos Aires

If you’re seeking a quiet, minimalist space, Faena Hotel will probably not be your cup of tea. But if unicorn heads dotting the walls, a giant, golden crown fountain hovering in the middle of the pool and a glam rococo-style cabaret theater with nightly tango shows pique your interest, then you’ll want to check out this 5-star Phillipe Starck-designed hotel. Located in a converted grain warehouse in the recently redeveloped waterfront barrio Puerto Madera, this 87-room hotel includes 21 spectacularly over-the-top suites. Amenities include an outdoor infinity pool with drinks service and a strong party scene, a spa with hammam, three restaurants and a cabaret theater that glamorously channels 1920s Buenos Aires tango clubs with nightly tango shows. There’s no front desk to check in. Instead guests are greeted by a “personal experience manager,” who will serve as a concierge throughout their stay.

Be Jardín Escondido by Coppola

Unless you’re George Clooney, it’s not often you’ll find yourself as a guest in the home of an Oscar-winning film director. Be Jardin Escondido is the idyllic former home and production headquarters of Francis Ford Coppola while he was writing the film Tetro. Located in the leafy and bohemian-cool barrio of Palermo Soho, the seven-bedroom boutique is in the center of the action for killer nightlife, trendy restaurants and boutique shopping. The historic home has an oxblood-color exterior with Italianate features complemented by an interior color scheme of earthy South American hues. The hotel has a relaxed chic vibe with terracotta tiles covered by cowhide and traditional woven rugs, inviting oversize leather sofas and solid, classic wood furniture. Rooms are named after members of the Coppola family and individually decorated with antiques and presumably souvenirs from their travels. Fittingly, the largest room, “Francis,” is where the director himself stays when he’s in town.
