Since 2009, CityGate Grille has been a favorite place to dine on Naperville’s north side. Located near the Hotel Arista on the Calamos Investments campus, owners Mae and John Calamos take great pride in offering delicious food and great service in a welcoming atmosphere.
“Naperville is a great family town and we really embrace its culture,” Mae Calamos said. “We welcome families to make our place their place to dine among friends.”
Whether it’s for a casual dinner or to celebrate a big event, like graduations and anniversaries, CityGate Grille has you covered.
Here’s the scoop on this Naperville favorite.
What’s on the menu? USDA Prime steaks surely are the headliner at CityGate, but the dozen sides that are impressive as well. They also have a great selection of seafood and several Greek-inspired dishes where executive chef Adam Tanner takes on a few of the Calamos’ family recipes.
About the owners: Mae and John Calamos Sr. are recognized business leaders and philanthropists in the area. John is known primarily for building Calamos Investments (headquartered in Naperville) and he is also the developer behind the office, retail and hospitality campus on Route 59 where CityGate Grille is located. Mae is the senior vice president and chief operating officer of Calamos Property Holdings and also runs Primacy Business Center.
A mission statement: “I take great pride in offering our guests delicious food and great service in a welcoming, yet elegant, atmosphere,” Mae Calamos said.
Decor: CityGate Grille offers a classic steakhouse decor with wood tables and trim. There is intimate lighting in the evenings and it’s comfortably bright for a business lunch or afternoon group outing. Mae Calamos handpicked much of the artwork that lines the entryway, inspiring all that CityGate Grille is to their guests: a great lunch spot, a live music venue, a family steakhouse and a place for celebration.
Food specialties: Beyond the USDA Prime meat and seafood and the Thursday prime rib special, CityGate Grille offers Greek specialties including the popular avgolemono soup, a Greek chicken, lemon and orzo soup; moussaka, a breaded eggplant with seasoned ground beef and lamb; and pastitsio, often described as a Greek lasagna.
We’re different because: Mae Calamos said it’s very unique that their executive chef, Tanner, has been with them for more than a decade, starting at Hotel Arista and moving to CityGate Grille. “The hospitality industry typically has very high turnover and it’s unique to be able to offer the level of consistent delight that Adam brings to CityGate Grille,” Calamos said.
Price range: Lunch $12-$20 and dinner $20-$40. There are also weekly specials like $5 burgers on Mondays (bar area only) or half-price flatbreads on Wednesdays.
Extras: Live music ranging from jazz to blues and from folk to rock in the bar Friday and Saturday evenings. CityGate also offers two private dining rooms and a lower level terrace room that can accommodate private meetings and parties. Their expansive, paved patio features a fire pit and overlooks a pond surrounded by natural grasses.
