If you thought your childhood treehouse was magical, you’ll want to book a vacation to Denmark STAT. In the Gisselfelt Klosters Skove forest, about an hour south of Denmark, a nature lover’s dream has just opened to the public: the Treetop Experience at Camp Adventure Park, a raised pathway that offers unbelievable views of the surrounding forest.
Designed by Copenhagen-based Effekt Architecture, the structure comprises nearly 3,000 feet of walkway connected to a 147-foot observation tower. The so-called “treetop walk” lets visitors meander at tree canopy height, allowing unprecedented views into the forest and its animal inhabitants.
The walkway, which opened earlier this month, is just one part of Camp Adventure, an outdoor activity complex that includes zip lines, ropes courses, and climbing facilities. The Treetop Experience is by far the camp’s star attraction, though; before it was even complete it on the 2017 ICONIC Award for Visionary Architecture.
The entire tower was thoughtfully designed to maximize interaction with—and education about—the surrounding forest. “The route through the trees passes gently and sensitively through different varieties of forest, while minimizing the disturbance of the environment,” explains the project description by Effekt. A lower walkway, set at the height of younger trees, offers a series of activities that encourage visitors to learn about their surroundings. The upper walkway, meanwhile, prioritizes views.
“The geometry of the tower is shaped to enhance the visitor experience, shunning the typical cylindrical shape in favor of a curved profile with a slender waist and enlarged base and crown,” says the project description. “This does not only increase the stability of the tower but also increase the observation deck area at the top of the tower. Furthermore, it also allows for better contact to the forest canopy.”
As a country with a strong tendency towards sustainability and a history of great design, it’s not surprising that Denmark would produce a stunningly beautiful structure that manages to celebrate nature—here’s hoping it inspires a broader appreciation for the natural world.
