There are islands, and then there’s the Hawaiian island of Maui, which is pretty close to my definition of island paradise. You can thank its balmy climate and warm ocean temps, sightings of sea turtles and migrating whales, as well as the island’s legendary laid back lifestyle.  I just came back from a blissful week exploring private properties managed by Exotic Estates, one of the leading luxury villa rental companies in the Hawaiian Islands.

While there are plenty of rental homes on the island of Maui, there are few that compare to the stable of properties that I saw. I discovered a number of villas suitable for the billionaire lifestyle at the top end of the feeding chain. The largest ones are essentially private resorts, as if someone had asked Four Seasons Hotels to create a blissful getaway and eliminate all the other guests. The smaller ones offer intimacy and seclusion for a small family or two couples. All of these villas offer incredible views, privacy and tons of space. These are houses where all – and I mean all — of the little details have been thought through.

Traveling with extended family, as I was? That’s when you really appreciate multiple alfresco lanai areas designed to maximize privacy. The villas I experienced had top-notch furnishings and tasteful décor, with water features that were spa-like, located in some of the choicest locations imaginable. For a vacation like this, there’s no question that the villa can make or break the experience.  Here are four Maui properties from Exotic Estates to consider when money is no object:

Hawaiiana Hale

This may well be one of the most luxurious and elegant beachfront homes on all of Maui. Offering panoramic views that include Kaanapali Beach and the islands of Lanai and Molokai, the promise is of perfect sunset views and spacious living amidst lush tropical gardens.

The welcoming, open floor plan includes a gourmet kitchen, formal dining room, and several seating areas for entertaining, reading, and gazing at unobstructed ocean views. There’s a poolside lanai for relaxation and al fresco dining. The Hawaiian Plantation style architecture is elegant and detailed, with granite and marble floors, mosaic tile, hand-carved teak railings, elegant moldings, period lighting, and Plantation era art.

Hawaiiana Hale has four private oversized bedroom suites that comfortably accommodate eight guests, each with its own limestone and marble bath, private entertainment system and Sonos music system. The main level suite features a King size bed and sliding glass doors leading to the pool deck. The remaining three suites are located on the second level. The two upper-level Master suites are located at opposite ends of the home, both facing the ocean. Both offer a King size bed, private lanai, and stunning ocean views. The last suite offers two Double beds, soaking tub in the bathroom and garden views.

There is also an exercise room offering a treadmill, stationary bike, and weights with weight bench as well as an office working space. There’s a heated swimming pool, hot tub, and hammock, along with a large outdoor dining table with seating for eight. Maui Royal Shores Villa

This four-bedroom gated villa sits on 1.5 acres of oceanfront land, with panoramic views of the surf on the reef just offshore, framed by a tropical garden. The villa compound has three structures: the main villa, an Ohana (guest house) and a building containing the gym and steam room. Including the lanai, the villa offers 9,300 square feet of living space.

The 75-foot pool wraps around the main villa and connects the various pavilions, with a variety of water features including a Jacuzzi, surrounded by lush landscaping. The main villa has three bedroom suites, each one with a sitting area, bedroom, en-suite bath, private lanai area, and a large closet. All the bedrooms offer ocean views. The great room and dining area are ideal for gatherings, with a true chef’s kitchen.

The upstairs library offers views of the West Maui Mountains and the fourth bedroom is located in the Ohana, which is like a villa in itself, with a private entrance, kitchen, and large bedroom with en-suite bath. The house offers maximum privacy but is about a 10-minute drive to Lahaina town. Lahaina Heights Villa

There are those who love the proximity of the beach and those who prefer the ultimate in panoramic views, which often come with the highest level of privacy imaginable. Lahaina Heights Villa hits the latter, with extraordinary views of the island of Lanai. It’s a relaxing, quiet retreat, and one of the island’s best vantage points for stellar sunsets.

There’s an amazing amount of outdoor living space, with a 1,000 square foot covered lanai and custom designed pool and spa, an outdoor shower, as well as a waterfall surrounded by classic Hawaiian landscaping to create an idyllic Hawaiian landscape.

With just two bedrooms, it ideal for two couples traveling together. The villa’s main living area has a large living room, complete with a surround-sound system and large Flat-Screen TV, and a fully equipped kitchen. The master bedroom is separated from the rest of the home and has a stone shower and deep tub. Napili Cove Villa

Napili Cove Villa offers a remarkable and intimate setting and seems to float above the water. Set on a quiet cove in Napili, it has two bedrooms and a wall of windows that flood the contemporary home with ocean light, one of those houses where the landscape seems to be part of the home.

There are multiple decks positioned to take in views of the ocean and the neighboring island of Molokai. The white-walled interior of the home is gallery-like and features an open floor plan. There is hardwood flooring throughout, natural wood detailing, and contemporary wood furniture. The chef’s kitchen allows cooks and guests to socialize.
